Lectionary Week
September 14–20, 2026
Scripture Overview

Each of the passages for this week has a way of drawing us into curiosity about how God might most palpably show up in the places where we experience a gap between where we are and where we want to be or think we should be. God provides sustenance for the Israelites as they experience the wilderness that exists between their deliverance from slavery and the Promised Land, and the psalmist praises God’s glorious deeds. Paul longs to be with Christ but recognizes his separation provides him the opportunity to serve others. In Matthew, Jesus tells a parable that challenges our understanding of equal access to the kingdom. These passages invite us to question our ideas about how we think life should go versus the reality of what is. The gaps in time or space between where we are and where we want to be can become places that remind us to see joy amidst the suffering and difficulties of life.

Questions and Suggestions for Reflection

Read Exodus 16:2-15. When have you found yourself in the wilderness? How did God meet you there? Were you always able to notice God’s presence?
Read Psalm 105:1-6, 37-45. When have you fallen away from seeking God and God’s strength? What helps restore your seeking?
Read Philippians 1:21-30. How have you experienced God’s joy even in the midst of suffering?
Read Matthew 20:1-16. When have you struggled with the vastness of God’s grace? When have you felt as if God has been more generous with other people? How did you handle it?

Respond by posting a prayer.

Exodus 16:9-15

9 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole Israelite community, ‘Come near to the LORD, because he’s heard your complaints.’” 10 As Aaron spoke to the whole Israelite community, they turned to look toward the desert, and just then the glorious presence of the LORD appeared in the cloud. 11 The LORD spoke to Moses, 12 “I’ve heard the complaints of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat. And in the morning you will have your fill of bread. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God.’” 13 In the evening a flock of quail flew down and covered the camp. And in the morning there was a layer of dew all around the camp. 14 When the layer of dew lifted, there on the desert surface were thin flakes, as thin as frost on the ground. 15 When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” They didn’t know what it was. Moses said to them, “This is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat.

The Israelites have an idea of how things should be going on the other side of slavery. Given their cries for help, they clearly don’t think life is going as planned. God ultimately answers their prayerful cries with quail and bread from heaven. The meat seems to go over okay,...

Gracious God, as I reflect on my life, help me to see all the ways you have met me in the wilderness stretches of my life. Amen.
