Lectionary Week
May 25–31, 2026
Scripture Overview

The readings this week from the Hebrew Scriptures focus on creation—the Creation stories from Genesis and a psalm of praise for God’s creative work. But Creation doesn’t end there. God is still on the move, creating even in times of transition. Paul’s farewell to the Corinthian church reminds them to continue to create space for the things that are most important. The risen Christ bids farewell to the disciples, but not before commissioning them to carry on his work, thereby creating the movement we know today as the church.

Questions and Suggestions for Reflection

Read Genesis 1:1–2:4. What does the first story of Creation tell you about God, about humanity, and about our relationship with God?
Read Psalm 8. What songs come to your mind when you reflect on God’s creating work?
Read 2 Corinthians 13:11-13. When have you had to say goodbye to people you loved? What were the most important things in those moments?
Read Matthew 28:16-20. If you were with the disciples on the mountain in Galilee when they met the risen Christ, what do you think you would feel? How do you respond to the Great Commission to “make disciples of all nations”?

Respond by posting a prayer.

Psalm 8:1-9

1 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name throughout the earth! You made your glory higher than heaven! 2 From the mouths of nursing babies you have laid a strong foundation because of your foes, in order to stop vengeful enemies. 3 When I look up at your skies, at what your fingers made the moon and the stars that you set firmly in place 4 what are human beings that you think about them; what are human beings that you pay attention to them? 5 You’ve made them only slightly less than divine, crowning them with glory and grandeur. 6 You’ve let them rule over your handiwork, putting everything under their feet 7 all sheep and all cattle, the wild animals too, 8 the birds in the sky, the fish of the ocean, everything that travels the pathways of the sea. 9 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name throughout the earth!

I spent the first half of my vocational life in music—initially as a music teacher, but mostly as a music minister. Because I spent so much time immersed in the music of the church, certain passages of scripture always evoke memories of particular songs, from choral music to hymns to...
