Decisions and Authority

These four passages lift the primacy of God as the author of all and thus the greater authority over all. God questions Job about his authority and ultimate knowledge of God’s creation. The psalmist affirms God as the author of creation. The Hebrews writer affirms that God, the author of life and the ultimate authority, chose Jesus as the great high priest. Jesus demonstrates God’s authority to determine positions of authority and status in God’s kingdom of Heaven to his disciples. When we decide to praise God, trust God’s authority, and serve, we help others and grow in faith.

Read Job 38:1-7, 34-41. How do you continue to hold on to belief in God’s goodness when you are in a period of anguish?
Read Psalm 104:1-9, 24, 35. Take a meditative walk or find a clear space to view the night sky. Reflect on God’s authorship of creation as reflected in these scriptures. How do you share in the creativity of God?
Read Hebrews 5:1-10. In what ways does the understanding of Jesus’ willing vulnerability while serving as high priest affect the way you interact with others?
Read Mark 10:35-45. Reflect on times you and others wanted a special position or promotion—perhaps the same one—that provided status and symbols of success. Where do you see genuine examples of servant leadership in your community?
